about the artist
Elizabeth Raol began trying to make Father Christmases about 10 years ago for a friend who collected them. My first attempts at teaching myself to sculpt truly embarrass me now (though the friend says she still loves every one), and my skills continue to evolve as I try new techniques and methods. I like to think that they are getting better. Each is a one-of-a-kind as no molds are used.
It is very important for me to feel that I am leaving a piece of myself that will be enjoyed and treasured long after I am gone. I enjoy studying the faces and hands of the elderly for each reflects its own history and hence, its' beauty is inspiring for people who like to sculpt. Though I have found a challange lies in trying the capture the innocence in a childs' face.

Designing the costumes for each is also immensely rewarding, as each takes on its' own unique personality.Over the years, starting at age ten I have sewn everything from clothes for all ages, figure skating costumes, riding habits and tack to wedding gowns. I have helped build community festival floats, decorated for various events and put on two home shows a year with friends.

But when I want to do something that never fails to make me smile, it would be working with "my boys"
as I call them. Watching them evolve never ceases to amaze me.....
sometimes a face you think just can't work turns out to surprise you!!!
I feel very fortunate to have my husband, Pradyuman,
who makes my visions of toys, accessories and inventive armatures a reality.
He has been so supportive of "my boys" and I think is equally as proud of them as I am.

I think the nicest compliment I've had was from a woman who paid an entrance admission to a show I did locally and told me that "just being able to see "my boys" made it quite worthwhile".
These Father Christmases were featured in a two, full page color spread in the local newspaper and will be featured in the 2001, Better Homes and Gardens, hard back version of "Santa Claus".
